ALS is defined as Advanced Life Support. ALS care includes both invasive and non-invasive procedures:
- Cardiac monitoring
- Cardiac defibrillation
- Transcutaneous pacing
- Intravenous cannulation (IV)
- Interosseous (IO) access and intraosseous infusion
- Surgical cricothyrotomy
- Needle cricothyrotomy
- Needle decompression of tension pneummothorax
- Advanced medication administration through parental and enteral routes (IV, IO, PO, PR, ET, SL, topical, and transdermal)
- Adherence to AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) protocols
- Adherence to AHA Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) protocols
- Adherence to Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) protocols
BLS is defined as Basic Life Support. BLS is a specific level of prehospital medical care to be provided by trained responders. This primarily non-invasive care focuses on the following concepts:
- The protection and maintenance of the patient’s oral and nasal airways
- The actual flow of air though natural or artificial respiration. Emergency oxygen may be used during this process.
- Monitoring blood circulation through pulse, heartbeat, or emergency CPR
Patient transport will focus on:
- the protection of the cervical spine
- using splinting and immobilization to avoid additional injuries
